I'd like to just go and watch some of the big ladder trucks everyone loves to buy trying to drive around in the city streets. That should be interesting.

The following is the link and posting from the FDNY UFA union regarding the position on the mutual aid drill with Long Island. The reason the drill was scaled down and moved to Randels Island was the push back from the union. The City still needs to go ahead with a scaled down version for NIMS and HLS reasons. www.ufalocal94.org/652_main/652_2006/652_20of06.html 65-2 #20 March 31, 2006 MUTUAL AID DRILL On Sunday April 2nd the Department plans to conduct a mutual aid drill between FDNY units in Queens and Brooklyn and various volunteer companies from Nassau County. The drill will begin at 1000 hours and run through 1200 hours. During this time, our members are expected to instruct the volunteer units in the familiarization and operation of our equipment and apparatus, as well as the quarters in which we house such equipment. Members of the UFA are in NO WAY OBLIGATED to follow orders from anyone other than FDNY Lieutenants, Captains, and Chief Officers. You are not instructors and should not be held responsible for teaching Long Island Firefighters how to do the job of a New York City Firefighter. In addition, being asked to operate unfamiliar equipment poses a safety risk to those involved. If any problem should arise in which you feel that you are being ordered to go above and beyond your job description, you should take a mark and bring the problem directly to your company officer or chief officer. Rely on their leadership in order for any concern to be properly addressed. However, if an order is given you must obey it. The UFA and UFOA support the notion of increasing our preparedness by providing the citizens of New York with proper fire protection. The best way to accomplish this is the immediate re-opening of closed fire companies and placing 5 firefighters on all Engine Companies at all times. Any UFA member found to take part in this joint exercise as a member of a Volunteer Company will be in violation of Article XVI, Section 3 of the UFA Constitution and be subject to expulsion from the Uniformed Firefighters Association. Fraternally. Stephen J. Cassidy President Joseph A. Miccio Recording Secretary

Who cares? If you don't want to go, then STAY home sunday morning. If you do go, just keep your mouth shut and do what you there to do.

go on their rant site and see how they talk about us, and how they are teaching us how to do their job at this drill. i don't now about anybody here but we're fireman to and know how to fight fires..we're just trying to help just in case. By the way if this shitbird cassidy would just ask us to help like fellow fireman we wouldn't show up so they can prove they need to open more firehouse but no "we are just volunteers"

Who cares? If you don't want to go, then STAY home sunday morning. If you do go, just keep your mouth shut and do what you there to do. Was not sure if anyone cares, thought it was interesting? Like to go to participate to do what we are there to do, but unfortunatly, most LI FDs originally planed to go have been taken of the drill. FDNY rant site is interesting on a firematic level for All Hands and around the kitchen to here what effects the members as a whole. Bueteful day today, I am out of here...

Just remember, their rant is similar to ours, not everyone from FDNY are on it. Its only a portion of members. Just becasue they may feel a certain way doesn't mean all the members feel that way.

I'm not surprised by the memo...it par for the course but I like to think of it as Business..not personal.....the union is there to create and support paid Firefighters...they look at the Vollie system as a group of under trained scabs.....NOT everyone, but the Union delegates and Officials...the head honchos, no doubt about it......and don't let them tell you otherwise.....if Nassau and Suffolk became part of NYC tomorrow and we all became paid NYC firefighters and dues paying UFA members, we would be their Brothers overnight.....sad but true........

You really can't blame the union. Bloomberg hates the FD. Next thing you know he will start a vollie company to cut down on OT.

You sure can blame the union....there is a right way and wrong way to make your point/case...bashing the Vollies in Nassau and Suffolk and Westchester and Rockland is not the right way......it's funny that there are many, many high ranking officers in FDNY that are Vollies or started out in Volunteer units............but those individuals never run for UFA positions because they know the deal.....to bad.

The drill went fine on sunday. The fdny personell had questions as to the way run our day to day operations. They were civil and not looking down upon us. The building we performed operations on was a mixed occupancy type. both crews worked together with no animosity. They had questions as to how our rigs were set up and why. Basically we (A.S. and O.B.) have unique set ups on our apparatus, due to the fact we don`t have the luxury as most depts in nassau as having a fire hydrant every 400 or 500 ft. A union suit stopped by as to check to see no union personell were on our rigs. But all in all it seemed to work out well.

How did any of the other departments that participated in this drill feel? What kind of scenarios did other departments that participated have?

Regardless of what union they do or dont belong to, regardless of their views twords vollies, good or bad, they are our brothers. just because we dont belong to the same union, or share the same ideals, we all perform one job. We are a family, and no union will ever change that. Even the most staunch anti-volly union member would give the shirt off his back for a brother. And i would do the same. I would hope you would all do the same.
