You seem to have a lot of info on their MO. I'm sure there are some cops who are smart enough to put an end to that crew. Their scanner use will only postpone the inevitable. When they are brought to justice, I hope a judge throws the book at them. There is just no advantage in monitoring cops because the radio is not the only way they communicate. But you knew that didn't you? Is there any major police force around that is now encrypting their DAY to DAY comms? I don't think NYPD, NCPD or SCPD would not encrypt if they thought it was a good thing to do. Now I know cops have to deal with some unsavory types, and they have to be suspicious of peoples actions, but they can't lose sight of their sworn duty to uphold the law, even if it means exposing them selves to harm. Save the encryption for the Black Ops, The citizens of this country need to know that their police force is not trying to hide from them.

also, if you think that the PD is not using encryption so buffs can listen, think again. It has to do with equipment technology & the almighty buck!

All those scanner buffs have conspired to deny our benevolent police forces the encryption protection they need to save the country from the ''wrong doers". At least we won the space race!

Well now that I've brought out all the right wing civil and equal rights bashers, I can say that you all need a little reading comprehension refresher. I'm talking about not encrypting DAY to DAY police comms to keep them responsible for their actions. Gargamel prides himself with the knowledge that he and his colleagues can talk to each other without fear of responsibility for their words. Oh, and how many times has anyone heard of unsolved crimes where the cops suspect the use of scanners to make a getaway? I bet everyone can remember a case of cops shooting first and asking questions later. [ That wallet in his hand looked like a gun!] LIFireEms would like Marshall Law declared every time the police felt it was hard to track down a litter bug! Sure tap my phone who cares! Certainly not bfd732. Well I'm very glad you guys don't have anything to say when it comes to Justice and freedom. You all would like to see the Patriot Act expanded to include Federal ID and travel documents to cross state lines. Don't worry the police and the feds know whats best for you. It's nothing personal. Remember, all law enforcement are our servants and not the other way around. The encryption of DAY to DAY police comms is wrong! Despite what Bush says, there aren't bomb throwing terrorists lurking around every coroner with a scanner in there hands. He was wrong about WMDs in Iraq. Oh, and yes to ladder3 for his point about one need to monitor the cops. Nick I have no problem with tapping my phone or for police to use encryprion. This is not because I am a radical right winger as you suggest. However, I am also not a radical left winger who sees conspiracy and invasion of privacy in everything. You can tap my phone because I have nothing to hide. You can use encryption because I do not believe it is my right or responsibility to monitor any emergency communications. I know I am among a bunch of buffs here, but the bottom line is none of us should have any expectation to listen to half the stuff we hear. There is not a reasonable argument that justifies it. I'm curious how many trials or investigations have you taken part in as a result of your monitoring? .................... That's what I thought!

I side with encrypting radio traffic, but I can see where newsnick feels the basic sector frequency shouldn't be. That is where most news agencies and freelancers get stories and video footage from. If you encrypt it they will only have a PD or FD press release telling them what happen and no video to go with it.
I never liked the fact that Data channels can be heard. There is alot of personal information going over the air waves. Not just DMV stuff.
Stay Safe

OK, I think we have all stated our opinions. I don't think anyones mind has been changed. Whether or not the as yet to be built Nassau County 500 Mhz digital trunk system goes encrypted for the DAY to DAY precinct comms is not going to be up to any of us. So lets agree to meet back here to renew the subject when the system goes up. If any of us are still alive, we can thrash this out all over again. Nick
