depends on if your looking for new or used...the old ht1000s are good, uhf tends to be cheaper than vhf on ebay prob around 200-300 for used..if you have to $$ to spend maybe look into the XTS series....not a big fan of the ht750 or ht1250

For fire duty, you can't beat the HT or MT2000 series. They'll take a beating.
For buffing duty, the HT1250 is prob your best bet.

I purchased a used Motorola HT1000 w/Mic and Charger on Ebay about two years ago for $300. I took it to a friend and he programmed it for me. If you watch Ebay, it's not hard to find a bargain, lots of PD's are upgrading their radio systems and are getting rid of their HT1000's.

I believe the 1000 series are the best radios. I have a MT1000 (Low band) as my fire radio and it works great, I bought it used from a friend. My Dept will shortly be using a high band frequency for fire ground and I plan on using my HT1000 (high band) for my fire radio, it holds up well. I have a HT1250 for buff stuff and the reception is definetly a lot better on the HT1000.

I'm a big fan of the Jedi series of radios, HT1000, MT2000's, MTX, MTS, blah blah blah. I have a MT2000 VHF full keypad and I love it, it holds up very very well against drops, dirt and rain. Anyways QUINTY, I have a UHF MTS2000 if you want it. Double the price since your one of those east end boys.... East End Distress. I mean Express.

Call me stupid but some of you guys actually have portables as buff radios? I'm just as much of a buff as the next guy but it never dawned on me to buy a portable. Thought those should be used for fire duty use. And I suppose were all careful and try not to key the mic. I've heard of guys going out an having chiefs and officers tones installed in thier pagers but this is a new one.

I only have two "transmittable" channels on my portable radio, and they are both for my Department, and I never use it to transmit. The other channels are blocked out from transmitting.
