I've never heard them activate their own call and then have firecom take over but I'm sure it happens. One of the paid members remains in the firehouse handling the radio to a certain point but is then responsible to drive 147 (Tower Ladder) to the scene. This then leaves the base unmanned until a volunteer shows up, at that point you will hear the member state "Garden City Units, Base is Manned" Firecom activates most of their calls & handles them until their base is manned by a volunteer. But they do activate some of their own calls, mainly automatic alarms that get a re-call advising of a false alarm. The base will activate for a 12A response (Pretty much a reduced response). The base also activates calls received through G.C.P.D. (fuel spills, assist, etc..)

Garden City activates (tones out the call) then hands it over to Firecom. They have 3 zones , depending which zone it is , is who mans the base. Zone 2 call, Co 3 goes to HQ and takes over Zone 3 call Co 2 goes to HQ and takes over. Not a 100 % sure if they get 2 or 3 alarms but i do believe they stay and handle the base. I do not know of any volunteer takeing over migh thave been something in b the past. I do also believe it is the tower ladder driver to tone it out then respond.
As far as why they do it that way i really do not know i know a few paid member si will try and find out.
