We are having some issues with our radios, apparently as I am told, alot of it is due to the terrain in our area. We have quite a few low areas that have become dead zones. We are not working out of a trailer (nor will we be as there is an available room inside the firehouse). Our tower was recently inspected and it was found to have some structual problems. Now there is a good chance it is going to have to be replaced. Almost all of these issues have surfaced during the prep to redo the radio room. Every time one problem is addressed, 2 or 3 more pop up. So for now, the easiest way to make sure everyone gets paged, the county will be doing the initial activation with a secondary activation from our room. Coming to work every night has become a new adventure in dispatching.....never know what's not going to be working next!

To up date Dix Hills, they are rebuilding the dispatch/control room. The temp room is upstairs. You might have noticed new trailing tones on their alert tones. What is really new is their plans to go to UHF! In perhaps a copy of Kings Park's commerical UHF [472.9375], DHFD will be at 471.4375, a commerical channel presently operating out of Plainview.

Another stupid idea, those channels offer no protection for the FD users, a mistake that will come back to bite them I am sure.

Isn't Plainview a little far out of Dix Hills?

Dix Hills is up and on the air from a well known location in their district. Good range to the Queens Nassau border. The next to move up to UHF, East Farmingdale [500 Mhz] by spring time.

I guess the teletubbies got to them? What benefit are they going to have by going 500mhz especially when they work a lot with bordering departments who likely won't have the same capabilities? Does EFFD expect the bordering departments to upgrade their radios just b/c they are? Anyone from there able to shed some light on this or maybe why this is an option?

Luke, If the surrounding Dept's are already on UHF they shouldn't have a problem. Most newer radios go up to either 512Mhz or 527Mhz depending on they they were bought. BIG HUG !!!!!

Cute...lol I was speaking to a member of a surrounding department and he told me that its going to be a problem if they switch. Not sure if its b/c they communicate on low band or what. I do remember someone saying that the telletubbies were making their pitch to EFFD for the trunked system. Did this take place?

I believe that goes back to when Syosset FD was putting together a trunked radio system a few years ago...

The head Tetetubbie has been trying to save the freqs that SFD hoped to use for a county wide tactical rescue system[ back in the day when SFD had a tec rescue unit] by trying to drum up some other department to buy into it. I don't beleve that EFFD is going that route. They rejected CC from SFD some time ago. SFDs 500mhz freqs were for mobil data terminals.

CC of SFD found some real suckers to buy into it in the ambulance district just north of you Nick! $2.5 million!!!

Well, let's all say a prayer for DHFD's efforts to straighten out the nasty mess left when they bought it to a certen snake oil salesman's promiss of "no problems, mon!". Little did they know that someone about 28 miles across the sound has a license full of paper for the same frequency! These commercial licenses have been diserted by the oil and other delivery companys to Nextell for their comms. The only hope for the holders of these licenses is if the wireless industry suddenly wants their band with. It could spell big bucks for them. In the mean time unsuspecting marks could be had to pay the bills untill their ship comes in. You know the old saying: If it is to good to be true... With any luck [or Russell Fox] Dix Hills will remain on the UHF band. Just have the check book ready.

Well that's what happens when you do business with real dubious individuals like JB. I don't think RF or CC have anything to do with this mess. They are too busy taking HCFAS for a $2.5 million dollar ride!

We see you trying, DHFD, and we are rooting for you. As soon as it's good to go, we can enjoy interoperablity.

Good work DHFD, problem solved! [see fcc site] Now we need to cheer HCFAS on and get them up to UHF to complete the circle.

I wouldn't hold my breath. HCFAS was laughed out of the Supervisor's Office when they asked for the $2.5 million!

I may possibly be wrong but I was told by a very reliable source that the funding for the porposed HCFAS was from their own budget and other means and not from simply "asking te supervisor"...
Not for nothing but before we run around quoting people's initials ( we all know whos being discussed), let's have some judgement and common sense.
Factually speaking some of the comments or assumtions made herein are plain out wrong. WOw, Soo much time on peoples hands.
Dont take offense to any of the above. Just my 2 cents

Sorry to inform you that yes, you are wrong in what your very reliable source (CC) told you about the funding for the project.
