bear in mind if you're driving a fire engine for a commercial purpose you have to have a valid CDL w/ an airbrake endorsment

The trucks are over 25 years old and are classified in NJ as Historic. They also fall under the same class as RV's where if you own an RV with air brakes etc you don't need a CDL. Trust me I looked into this before starting the business.

That's pretty good of NJ to let you get around the CDL that way. I'm pretty sure NY would try and bang you for the extra money

Trust me I looked into this before starting the business. You might want to look into that for NY. Vehicles over a certain weight are no longer regulated by the VTL, they fall under Article 49 of the CFR. Another reason to research that just a wee bit more is, if you're using the same vehicles in both states you're now an interstate business. I don't know exactly how your vehicles would be defined in NY, but I will informally ask one of the Motor Carrier guys at work and see what they think.

Guys, sorry for those who PM'd and or called that I haven't gotten back to. It's a busy time of the year at work and with the business, not to mention the fire house and the storm that we are still cleaning up from the other day. I will be getting back to people on the phone next week. Send an e-mail and I can answer any questions quickly. I am in the process of looking into all the regulations as well as getting an additional truck. I hope to be running with this by August.

I am collecting e-mails and phone numbers and will start making calls mid-July. Paperwork with the state is on it's way and the hireafiretruckny.com address temporarily points to the nj site. Also have my 516 phone number set up.
