Saturdays "festival" event in C.I.? brought out what seamed to be a multi agency coordination using Tac 2 of the nation wide 800 band interoperability [there's that word again!] channels. EMS, Town safety and fire all seamed to be answering to an OEM base. The signal was strong on the south shore [Moses' Beach] but it fell off north of the E-way. Could be a mobil command bus. What's the deal here?

The FRES command van was requested due to turn out that was anticipated by the event staff. They were stating 30,000 people for a 4-5 block radius. The channel was used by all with no problems both from the van and portables through out the event. ***side note (OT) the van is available for big events, just have to ask***

No, I beleive the entire 800MHz system is administered by SCPD. The tac Channels are turned on and off by SCPD Communications. Any County Agency could potentially use them, but permission must be requested.

The repeater in use had to be a mobil, it just didn't have the power to make it north of the LIE.

I am almost positive it was simplex only.

Capt you are right it is all run through scpd and it was simplex. some communications did go through the van it self. Any 800 radio should be able to go from CI to north of the expressway without problem, some little areas on the shore excluded due to geographic layout...

Actually, There is an I Call and I TAC channel(s).
The I CALL is a nationally based repeater channel/system, that can be turned on and off, and no not the SCPD (feds).
The I TAC channels are simplex only.

But remember, the I-Tacs are not the only I/O's out there.

Um....just wanted to throw out some concern (a little late) here.
I SERIOUSLY DOUBT that the Icall channel is a nationally based repeater system. That kind of infrastructure would be VERY expensive, and limited in its use.
There could be Feds (or SCPD) monitoring the Icall channel for simplex transmissions, but I've never heard anything about the ICall channel being used as part of a repeater system.

It is true, Pride. I am not sure of the Tx/Rx, but most jurisdictions, NYC included have chosen a repeated I-Call channel. The City Disaster channels are the same way. Simplex and repeated on the 800 side. I will try to get more details. As far as nationally based, i doubt that as well, there are still PD's out there on VHF.
