Cops: Fire chief's SUV stolen at Hofstra, at least 6 injured
At least six people were injured Tuesday after an unidentified teenager stole a Uniondale fire chief's SUV on the Hofstra University campus and sped away with emergency lights flashing before slamming into several vehicles, police said Tuesday.
A fire chief had rushed to Hofstra to answer an alarm and left his keys in the vehicle, which was also left running, while he investigated, when the suspect jumped in and drove off, said Nassau Police Det. Sgt. Richard Laursen.
The driver took off going west on Fulton Avenue and slammed into a Lexus - the beginning of a chain-reaction crash.
At least one of the occupants of a maroon GMC SUV the suspect later rear-ended was seriously injured, Laursen said. The victim was transported to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow; his condition was unknown Tuesday.
Two others in the vehicle, including a 4-year-old, were transported to the hospital. The 4-year-old's condition was not considered serious. The condition of the other victims was unknown.
The suspect, who was also taken to the hospital for observation but was not seriously injured, is being charged in connection with the theft of the fire department SUV. Authorities said the suspect could face additional charges depending on an accident reconstruction under way Tuesday night.
Police are trying to determine how fast the vehicle was going and are asking anyone who saw the crashes to call them at 516-573-7788.
The fire department declined to comment.
"Nobody's going to give out any information until we have an interview with our lawyers tomorrow," said Anthony Lebron, the Uniondale first deputy chief.
