RIP
newsday.com A firefighter who was his department's chaplain collapsed at the scene of an early-morning blaze Wednesday at a Huntington Station bagel shop and later died, fire officials said.
"The Huntington Manor Fire Department regrets to announce the line-of-duty death" of the firefighter, Chief Robert Herley said in a prepared statement.
His name was withheld by the department until it could notify his family.
The department could not confirm a report that the firefighter had suffered cardiac arrest. It was unclear whether the firefighter was fighting the blaze at the time he collapsed. He was taken to Huntington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The fire at the Uber Cafe at 334 Depot Rd. was called in at 3:02 a.m. and was put out by 3:32 a.m. The Suffolk County police arson squad is investigating.
Nathan Khaimov, who said he had owned the store for about a year and a half, had been interviewed by an arson investigator.
"Right now, we don't know anything. They won't even let me into the store," said Khaimov, who was smoking and pacing the parking lot.
