It's not stealing if you give credit where credit is due. Reported by News12 Long Island... Trooper shoots driver during highway skirmish (09/14/09) WEST ISLIP (AP) - State police say a trooper fatally shot a suspect during a traffic stop after the man grabbed a police-issued baton away from the officer and began pounding him with the weapon. The altercation Sunday afternoon on the Robert Moses Causeway in West Islip ended when 42-year-old Steven Barraco died from a single gunshot wound.
The trooper was not identified by name. He was treated at a hospital for head and facial injuries.
The shooting happened after Barraco was stopped for driving erratically and speeding at over 100 mph.
During a confrontation with the trooper, police say, Barraco managed to grab the baton. He was shot once in the upper torso. He tried to flee on foot, but was apprehended by passing motorists, who held him until other troopers arrived.
