It is the type with the 2 Con-ex boxes together( AKA The Can). The instructors are going to train on it within in a week or two. I heard sometime in April it will be up and running.

All chiefs should have recieved a letter that asked any department interested to sumbmit possible dates for training and the academy was going to have a lottery to start scheduling for this spring.

From what I hear each dept in the county has been allotted 16 spots for the Flashover. You can either do a 1 day on the weekend for 5 hours with 2 burns (8 Firefighters per burn) or 2 weekday nights, one being a classroom and other being the 2 burns.
My dept has decided to ask each company captain to summit a list of members who what to go and then the chief's office will make the final decision. 16 spots is not a lot.
I have been to the FDIC but never have had the luck to get into their flashover but from what I am being told SCFA's flashover will not burn as hot as the FDIC's.
Take it for what is worth.

I guess it's time to dust off the old bunker gear. I know an instructor that runs CT's flashover unit and he recieves 2nd degree burns on his shoulders all the time.

That sounds real nice. Why would he get 2nd degree burns? What is he doing wrong? Doesn't sound like a good place to send probies to learn to be safe if the instructors are getting hurt.

Saw it in use last night, think it was Centereach or CI training. It looked hot, but also well run. Wonder if anyone who's been through it has comments?

Heard there have been some complaints from probation/ FRES, the nursing home and PD HQ's about the amount of smoke that's being sucked into their air handling systems...

the only reason probations has been having issues is due to theweather in the first few weeks of operation. The air was very cool, keeping the smoke banked down. It is a really snotty drill.

I thought it was supposed to open toward the end of the month. I know there is allot of instructor training involved with the can. All instructors need to go threw fifteen evolutions in order to get certified in the use of the can. Each evolution has a minimum of four flashes sometimes more depending on the fuel. There are two evaluations per drill. The instructors were having two to three drills a day the past couple of weeks. They were done before the field opened at night during the week, I don't know how it was being done during the week.
Onto the weather, Weather is an issue with the can. They can't do or continue a drill in the can during rain. Any water on your gear before going in the can is a very BAD thing. The drill is practiced outside in chairs before you go inside. No practice, No drill.

Your friend might tighten his SCBA straps to tight. It crushes the air out of the liner of the coat. The air in the liner acts as an insulator.

Thanks XCAP but he's been doing it for a long time. He's been at the CT academy over 20 years so I guess every now and then he gets burned. He was shocked when I told him Suffolk was just getting a simulator.

I'm going out for it Monday night. We were told that our gear has to be "clean" How clean is clean? Also I was told the academy gives you a helmet that they do not let you wear your own. Any one have comments on this? I'm kinda glad that they give us helmets because I would really hate to ruin my helmet for this drill.

Billy
Did you take the classroom part if it? I was told you had to have that first or it was a no go.
The instructors have to wear clean gear also. No Class "A" house dark allowed. They don't want the carbon buildup on the gear. I'm sure it is a sefety issue.
As for the helmets, They will provide clean Tatical Tupperware (I'm guessing something like 1010's). This is for safety also. It will keep people from flame surfing trying to get thier helmet crusty. Anyone that attempts to darken a helmet by flame surfing will stop the drill and the department may be asked to leave. Some leather helmets have passed on out there already.

you MUST go through the class. No Exceptions. if at anytime, for any reason the rules are not adhered to, the member and department will be sent home and not be invited back. they are very strict on this. Yes, they give you a helmet to wear in the simulator. they do not want people going just to get the "Bronx Bend", so dont think about it. You will be low to the ground. it will be hot, appx 500 degrees in some evolutions. the air you breathe will be warmer than usual. this is not a toy, it is a tool. it is not for probies, and prolly not for guys getting ready to retire. you will take a beating, even though you are just kneeling there.

Very interesting operation with the flash over training unit. The instructors are doing an excellent job at it. Of course the evolution I went in on, there was a problem with lighting the fire, and few other things were going on which I believe caused the instructors to quickly move through it. I think we were in there for about 10 minutes tops. The evolution I was on, I didn't really feel any heat, really good smoke condition and seeing the fire roll slowly over your head was very interesting. Being all suited up, hood, helmet strap, collar up, etc makes it pretty hard to move your head to look above you. The guys on the first evolution said it was pretty hot and the helmets the county provided showed it. The County instructors are putting a lot of hard work and dedication into it and I'm sure once this prorgram gets running, it will be an excellent drill. Just a heads up to any one going out there, they want you to wear pants & a long sleeve shirt (at least thats what we were told an hour before we left) Also if you can bring spare gear. The instructors use an engine to kill the smoke condition given off by the training unit, so if you're on the line or stang during the first evolution you'll probaly end up getting soaked which won't go over too well when you go into the drill.

Another good point Billy. Not a good idea to be going into that type of environment with wet gear. The moisture will boil and you will get burned. Didnt know about the long sleeve shirt though, it makes sense. Im having my chiefs file for evolutions. This will be one of the best training tools we've had in the county.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but at our last Officer's Meeting held Tuesday May 2nd the Chief's Office reported that some residents in the area around the SCFA have filed an Injunction against the County to stop the use of the can. So all future evolutions are on hold till the county can control the smoke conditions. As BillyBuff stated we (Lindenhurst) were out there Monday April 17th it was a very interesting drill like Billy said didn't feel much heat other than the warmer air in the SCBA but it was very interesting to watch the fire develop into the flashover. In regards to the injunction I was speaking to Chief Kost while we were out there and he was telling us that they were looking into grant money to obtain a Heavy duty propane heater to mount on top of the can to dissipate the toxins in the smoke. I guess they'll need to speed up purchasing that unit in order to re-open the course.

It was NOT the residents, it was the Union that represents the Probations Office and some others who will remain un-named.
