Does your Dept have RIT? How does your Dept. use RIT/FAST ? Auto M/A for working fires? Within your own Dept as part of 2 in 2 out rule? Where did you get your training county, state, private? Just curious how other do it.

If FRES is on the ball we should get automatic RIT/FAST from Riverhead for their baby ladder truck. We're finally going to get guys trained at SCFA in May. We really don't have many "senior" men but If I'm not comfortable with the crew I let the officer know and we wait a little bit. Like everything else membership changes and chiefs change and we don't really get called for RIT anymore. As far as in house training we stick with the basics, a couple of firefighter down evolutions to keep everyone sharp. I don't agree with setting up high point systems on ladders etc. When shit hits the fan DRAG MY SORRY ASS OUT OR DROP ME OUT OF THE WINDOW!! Don't waste time setting all that crap up! It's a shame neighboring departments don't call us more often knowing we can beat the other dept. in. Oh well.

Does your Dept have RIT?
Yes
How does your Dept. use RIT/FAST ?
Mutual aids to a dept for RIT are restricted to Class A FF who are off probation. Preference given to those members who have completed the SCFA RIT course.
Auto M/A for working fires?
Yes. Auto M/A from the closest department.
Within your own Dept as part of 2 in 2 out rule?
See above.
Where did you get your training county, state, private?
SCFA RIT course + inhouse training

If FRES is on the ball we should get automatic RIT/FAST from Riverhead for their baby ladder truck. If FRES started doing that, every 'king' in the county would go insane. Your chiefs should know when its time to call for RIT/FAST; that time is the second you have a confirmed working fire. FRES can not get involved in operational procedure. Thats what chiefs are for. FRES acts only as a coordinating agency. However, if you put in an activation/mutual aid plan that included such instructions, where a department was to be activated immediately, then maybe that is the way to go.

"However, if you put in an activation/mutual aid plan that included such instructions, where a department was to be activated immediately, then maybe that is the way to go".
That's what i meant. There is a written procedure at FRES. There is a plan like that for brush fires in certain areas as well.

Thanks for the feedback guys, pretty much what I thought, but we've been told that use of RIT is declining. I interpret that to mean that some dept. are handling it"in-house" rather than auto. M/A. I know that goes against the idea of "emotional detachment" but I can see some wanting to handle it themselves. Regardless of the actual process used I think the RIT skills are beneficial for everyone to learn and practice, does anyone agree?

wqce207a, I don't know what department you are from, but I can't find anything at FRES showing and automatic RIT from Riverhead to anybody. You should have your chief check with FRES and send in the policy on Department letterhead to have it put in place.
