There is a place in Deer Park that gives an excellent prep course. Both my buddies took the class and the FDNY test and both got 100's. I think its called police tutorial services.

they give the practice physical several months after the written, you will receive a note after taking the written test about the walk through. They have you do all the stations but not @ 100% or timed. Just so you have an idea of what its like. When they gave the test in Dec 02, the walk through was in April of 03 with phyiscals starting around july 03 if that gives a good time frame of what it would probably be like

I'm taking a CPAT in Connecticut this month and Charlotte next month. I have a feeling FDNY's physical is gonna be totally different from the national CPAT.

A buddy of mine recently took the Captains test for FDNY, he's an LT now... He passed but said it was hard!!! They have made all the Civil Service exams much harder than they were years ago... Also keep in mind that the cut off for FDNY is 29 years old... Are there many people here older than 30 or is it just me?

I hear you with the age limit !!! Wish someone would challenge the constitutionality of it under age discrimination. My understanding is that happened and was successful but that NY Civ.Serv. jobs were grandfathered under a previous legislation. Oh well......... I definitely think they should base it on physical fitness and ability rather than age, most of us will be working until we're in our sixties and anyway and I'm not saying a 60 year old is the prime age for firefighting but I've also been passed up marathons by guys in their seventies and when you consider the average shape of firefighters it seems many obtain their best times in races to the refridgerator !!!! I know - Sour grapes by someone who found their calling at age 40 :{)

Well you know why the age cut off is 29... They want you retired by 49 unless you are an officer.. you become a liabilty on that job as you get older.. They don't want a 55 or 60 year old fireman climbing 25 flights of stairs carring hose and out of breath... not to mention that most guys wouldn't pass the annual physical on lung capacity anyway at that age..

Well guess that decides it No one knows of any 20 or 30 somethings on these jobs that are overweight or out of shape right? Give me a break. I'm not in the best shape I've ever been in my life and I'll give many guys 10-20 years my junior a run for their money, all the things you mention have alot less to do with age than they do physical shape. And frankly if you consider experience and maturity that comes with age you'll likely have much betteer decison makers who won't put themselves at unnessary risk as often as a younger guys do. So in the end where is the real liability? Bottom line it's currently the law, but as I first suggested in today's social climate where we there is supposed to be no discrimination based on gender, age, race, etc.... and you are supposed to be judged simply on your abilities and test scores I think this will be challenged again.

FDNY bows to diversity critics - Todays Daily News
Hiring test standards to be eased
BY LISA L. COLANGELO, ROBERT F. MOORE and KATHLEEN LUCADAMO DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITERS
In a major shift, the FDNY is set to relax its hiring requirements as it struggles to boost the number of minority firefighters, the Daily News has learned. Applicants will need only 15 college credits - down from 30 - or six months of work experience, sources said.
Candidates with at least two years of military service also will qualify, a rule that remains unchanged.
Mayor Bloomberg is expected to announce the new hiring guidelines this morning at Engine 231/Ladder 120 in Brownsville, Brooklyn, sources said.
The FDNY has long been dogged by criticism about its lack of diversity, and its hiring practices are under investigation by the U.S. Justice Department, with findings due out shortly.
"The changes, along with a stronger recruitment effort, are small steps in the right direction," said Capt. Paul Washington, head of the Vulcan Society, a group representing the FDNY's black firefighters and a frequent critic of the department's hiring practices.
"It's encouraging, but there's more to be done."
Of the FDNY's 11,400 uniformed members, about 325 - less than 3% - are black. About 30, less than 1%, are women.
Today's announcement comes after the department launched a massive advertising blitz - including bus-stop and subway posters as well as radio spots - last spring to increase its ranks of women and minorities.
The entrance exam is offered every three years, with the next one scheduled for Jan. 20, 2007, according to the FDNY Web site. The filing period for applicants is now through Oct. 13.
A spokesman for the department, Frank Gribbon, confirmed that today's announcement would offer "details of our recruitment campaign that will coincide with the upcoming test."
Top FDNY bosses also are considering a change in the way the test is scored, sources said.
Applicants who live in the five boroughs are currently given five extra points on the exam.
But under a new proposal, applicants with a city address would receive 2-1/2 extra points and those with a diploma from a city high school would win another 2-1/2 bonus points, sources said.
The percentage of minorities in FDNY graduating classes has more than doubled since 1999, fueled mainly by a surge in Latino firefighters, officials said.
But when 139 probationary firefighters graduated in April, just six were black.

Taz I was just going to PM you about the test. On the DCAS site all it says is the test date and filing period are PENDING. I assume I can still send in my civil service application and not piss anyone off? If you could clarify this I'm sure it would help out other people on the board.
