as long as you do what the instructors say, and stay down below the floor of the flash room you will be fine. It gets hot when you above that level....I went 2 weeks ago...no problem with gear

I had no problem with my gear when I went through last year. The only thing is, they don't let you wear your own helmet, they provide those.

we, Lindenhurst, were one of the first groups through and as stated above as long as you stay low and do everything the instructors say you'll be ok unless of course the damper gets stuck shut then your F'ed just ask NLFD

If you do not follow the instroctors direction closely and stricktly, not only will you destroy your gear, but you will not be asked to come out again. They say it before every evolution, and somehow, there are already a few departments on the black list.

from what I heard NLFD was training when the damper got stuck no serious injuries from what I understand but I heard their gear took a beating and 1 female FF received minor burns due to medal wires in her bra. I'm sure disp15 has more info on this incident. I'm just glad no one was seriously injured anyone who has been in the simulator would know it could have been a hell of allot worse.

Ok , I'm making policy here, no bras in the simulatorand for safety we're going to ask all the Female FF to train together. Of course, I will be applying for a job at the acedemy as soon as this policy is enacted. :{)

April and May acedemy schedules have 7 and 11 Dept.'s signed up for it, respectively. I have to assume they have the problems worked out or they wouldn't be scheduling so many classes. Almost seems like the problems are the exception not the rule. Hope that word gets out.

BUMP.....
New question - I heard a rumour that many Dept.'s are finding that they have to retire or replace PPE after their members go through the simulator. Anyone expeerience that? How often does your Dept. replace your bunker gear? Just curious.

I feel that everyone go through this simulator. It really is awsome training. You really get a chance how to read the smoke. Once the simulator flashes the instructor hits it ceiling with not even a gallon, and its gone. Very good training recommend every dept should do it. But stay real real low!!!!!

Well, after many questions and two years of asking we finally got to go through it this past Saturday. We had no problems, no injuries or damage to any of our equipment. They give you helmets so that yours will not be damaged (even if your tempted to get that Salty look). One precaution we did take was to use older facepieces that we had kept from old packs we replaced, just in case they took any heat damage. They tell you not to look directly at the fire to avoid any damage to face pieces, but you never know. They tell you to stay low, never to stand up, use all of your PPE and they check that your safely dressed before going in.
To me it seemed like a well planned and very safe drill. Simply to see the evolution of a fire like that (so few of us do in the real world these days) was worth it. But to see the initial flame overs, the way the smoke banks down and how quickly the flash envelops the room is a very compelling reason to pay attention to what's happening around you and to avoid the tunnel vision we all get. I wouldn't discount the value of just watching your fellow members in that environment, if everyone stays calm does what they're supposed to, communicates and no one panics, you know you're with a crew you can count on. For that reason alone I agree with Quint everyone who is an interior FF should go though this. Great drill and kudos to SCFA instructors.
