the 5 ambulance companies in the town of islip banded together to form a tactical ambulance "3-tac-1"
VAC's involved: Brentwood, Central Islip, Exchange, Bayshore and Sayville
what it is is a roaming ambulance throughout the 5 towns, staffed by one of the departments involved. (for example, mondays might be brentwood, tuesdays might be exchange etc.)
the way it works is it is staffed from monday through friday, 6-6. It's always suppose to be on the road and when a department is on its last signal 3, the ambulance begins to start "rolling" towards the call cold. Then when the department reaches its 24 time, the tac ambulance lights it up and responds.
it started at the new year... seems to be working pretty well and they are sorting out all the kinks as they go.

Are they hiring Emt's for that Roaming ambulance and if they are how do you go about getting an application for the job

negative.... each department is responsible for staffing their day (5 depts, 5 days a week..each get 1 day). if they can staff it with volleys they staff it with volleys if not then that individual department will put members of their paid staff on

intresting concept, i wonder how its working out and how it will work in the long run. im also wondering if other townships and vfd's are looking at it as a possible model in their respective areas. are there plans for additional units in islip? how does it work if the 'tactical' ambulance is in the area of where the call is and does not wait to be told to respond and just goes?

i didn't hear anything about responding on the first signal 3 but then again according to remsco ambulances are only suppose to have one signal 3 and mutual aid in 5 minutes (something like that anyway) i believe the only one who compiles is central islip (activation... 1 minute... signal 3.... 1 minute.... mutual aid) ---- defiantly possible its an evolving process and is constantly changing
as far as responding when not being called its just like buffing a call going lights and sirens, not covered under insurance and subject to disciplinary action

from what i understand about this 'tactical' ambulance is only to respond after signal 3s are given and the home department or VAC cant get out. my question is why delay treatment, if there is an ambo close and its ready to go, why wait till you make sure no vollies are around, or why wait until jim bob and jack the vollie man shit shower and shave on the way to the firehouse to get the ambo out...

its a 'tactical' ambulance so from the sound of that it must be all black with a 'esu' bumper and compartments for the swat equipment. manned by super tactical medics with big guns...

Regardless I think it is a postive thing when Towns can become proactive and try and come up with innovative ideas such as this. They might not always work at first but if they stick with it and work out the kinks I think its a good idea. It dissapoints me when I constantly hear signal 3's on ems calls, cause if it was my family I would want them there as quick as possible. Its nobodies fault, not everyone can make every call. Its just life. I hope it works out and other areas can look into using a similiar system.

The Tac ambulance has worked very well for the TOI. We haven't really had too many problems with the whole "buffyness" factor that was discussed here. It has actually been expanded now to include a medic (or CC) from each department on there day (Tac Medic). The departments and there days:
Monday - Bay Shore Tuesday - Sayville Wednesday - CI Thursday - Exchange Friday - Brentwood
There actually has been discussion of adding a second Tac bus for each day, more than likely from a second department, though nothing has come of it yet.
