OKay, something new. Who runs as companies? And who runs as departments? Do you like it or is the other way better?

Central Islip runs every call as a 'General Response". we have companies, but strictly for administrative purposes. We respond as a department, and for the time being is better. But I would like to think that with the rapid growth of our district and number of callse, we move to a comapany response or an area response. This might lessen the burden on all members, and increase response knowing that the alarm is in your area and promote some more pride.

theres no reason to wake an entire department up at 3AM for a dumpster fire, wires down, run-of-the-mill mva, etc etc

Sayville runs as a Department... Companies (Resolute Hose and Hook and Ladder) are also for administration duties, fund raising, functions, etc... As far as station alarms, depending on the run, we will run station alarms, but its normally at night and on rare occasions...

Right, for a dumpster fire, wires fuel spill etc just assign 1 company.

I agree in the middle of the night the only thing that should be a general alarm is a 13 or a 23 mva everything else should be a station alarm. Why shold you get woken up for a car fire or dumpster fire that one engine can handle.

What if you only have a couple of people show up, or no qualified driver??? They'll activate the rest of the companies then. Its very rare. When we know we're the only company we'll make sure we get out.

Okay now lets go in a different direction. When you respond, can you get on another company's truck? ie, engine company member responding on the truck cause you missed the engine?

as for the first question, Dix Hills SOP's are very similar to Commack's. DH however does not have a separate truck company. Each of the three stations has a class A and a heavy-rescue pumper which are both fitted with engine and truck tools (the latter also being fitted with hydraulic tools). Although, Company 1 has a quint instead of a class A. Companies are simply based on where in the district you live, not engine v. truck. Whether you're company is responding as a truck or engine depends on where the call is and if you're first-due, or second-due, etc.

My department is set up like CI's. We have members of all the companies spread over both stations, but run general response. I am in the truck company and my priority is to my truck, but I respond on whatever the OP's say to roll on the call. As Captain I rode more in the cab of the Engines then in my Tower. I also have to agree with Capt371, I hope in time we can go to station responses for the lesser calls.
Stay Safe

In my dept we go on whatever truck is on the ramp waiting to go. We have two co's and two stations, we do not ride as co's.

I dont think even he knows what he is saying.
In CI, we are crossed trained on all rigs. We dont have the luxary of saying "I want to be a truckie today." You show up, get on the rig thats started, plain and simple. I dont know how departments get away with restricting personnel to a specific rig...Especially in a volunteer service where there is no promise of a crew showing up.

It all depends on how your set up also Cap. We have 4 Houses. 3 Engs (1 is a quint/squad) and the Hook is out of HQ with a Tower, Rescue & Brush. There is also the spare eng @ hq that rolls only if it's in the direct vicinity of HQ and no Engs on the road. It takes all the decision making out of it. So easy a caveman could do it !

1st question: -from 5am to 7pm its general response to any and all fire calls -from 7pm to 5am we have "station alarms" for 23s & 12s and such. we only have minis at the stations though so if its a legit 12, the main gets activated for the gi. for mvas: if its in station 1 or station 2 area, only that station and the rescue from the main gets activated. we also respond that way for mutual aids. if the department closest to the south house or the east house 24s us for something, they get first dibs on the alarm unless they ask for a ladder or rescue. if that station cant get out, whatever is first out of the other station or the main goes.
2nd question: the stations run as companies because they dont have the option otherwise. at the main we have jupiter-27 truck & lightning engine 1. jupiter has the ladder & gi and lightning has the engine & rescue. regardless of whether you have a 1 or a 27 on your shield, you get on whatever piece of apparatus is on the ramp.
