The bottom line is that there is no "right" answer. This started off as a question and everyone feels differently. Grumpy...there is no 100% right answer. You may like it and I may disagree....but EVERYONE is entitled to an opinion. And guess what...every dept doesnt operate the same way so this might only be good for some departments.....thats all...no biggie

My guess is Point Lookout. It is surrounded by water on 3 sides. Then again so is all of Long Island.
Sq5; your points are well understood regarding your Department and having coverage. By mentioning that you are not content with leaving your area unprotected shows that you care. That being said, I and some others here seem to be more tuned in to your disposition towards the system and its overseers and it stops there. By folding your tents and not engaging contructively you are encouraging the membership to settle for a "whatever" attitude when you well know that serves NOBODY.
Continue to vent your feelings. There are people on this board that I will disagree with as well as you have found. My suggestion is be humble and to the point on the "subject" and avoid sandbagging the whole system.
And I once again will give you the friendly advice to approach the Supervisors at the FSA and tell them of your plight regarding manpower, apparatus, and information
.........................and yes I still bet you $100 that they will do anything and everything in order to make your situation brighter.

First off, I dont want to get into this topic anymore, beacause the points being brought up are just old. Second FOW my point is and was, why does Chief Murray not ask ALL of the Departments what they think about Dept opts. They should be there to train our members. Many Dept's have many SOPs and that makes their job very diificcult not to mention all the know it alls that go there. My entire point was for OUR academy is to serve US. And I am responsible for my District and I Dont entirely understand this new dept opts procedure. I just dont want to send a special piece of equipment like a tower ladder for us to do something like car fires. Thats all. And by the way you would owe me the $100, i have already tried.

Do you really expect the to individually call each and every department to find out what they want? Have you ever tried to call volunteer fire department chiefs during the day, only to leave message after message until they decide to return the call.
No, you haven't. It goes both ways. If you, or your department has a problem with something, how hard is it for your chief to pick up the phone at his convenience to discuss this with the academy?

I am one of those guys returning the calls. And they have this new thing called a battalion meeting that just maybe they could bring it up at. Your points are valid but don't you think that everybody else could think of those things as well. This forum was for opinions and I voiced mine. Seems as if your the one with a problem who is never satisfied.

well Squad5 apparently you keep posting and checking what other people post here, so you must be somewhat interested.
I happen to like the new format at the FSA. I especially like the idea of an "unknown" night. If you happen to get a tools class or something a little different it can be a great oppurtunity for probies and junior guys. I know my company has some newbies and that would be perfect, maybe not the case for all departments but I think that could benefit the majority of the 71 departments countywide. The props that the FSA has makes it pretty unique, and we should all be happy we have the oppurtunity to train there and better ourselves, yea of course scrubbing in the shower for 2 hours sucks but its well worth it to be better trained and ready for work back home and maybe for a mutual aid if your covering for another department that is at Dept. Ops in Bethpage! Just my 2 cents.

Back on the topic, the dept ops went pretty well tonight. To clear up a few rumors and misunderstandings, you do know what you are doing when you arrive at bethpage. We were directed to stage at the tower. They didnt tell us what kind of operation we were getting into until we met with the instructors. Some people still thought that the FSA were gonna send us racing across the "campus" to another area but it wasnt the case. Its almost nice to not know whats comming next week.
