I wish my department could go self dispatching, we just don't have the funds.

My Dept. is self dispatch. But I love the way firecom tones out and signs on the air, very professional. Roslyn should keep with firecom

you have a lot of +'s and a few -'s with the self dispatching. Its a good way to go in the future but not right now.

well look @ how 580, 930, 940 & 950.....all they do is their district....they have a layout of only their district...preplans the whole nine yards...it also makes it easier on firecom not 2 deal w/ numerous FD's @ the same time....the list goes on...i think there are more (+)'s than (-)'s...thats just my opinion

you're right. It makes it a whole lot easier, when you have a 10 going on and then you have to deal with other dept calls. Self-dispatching is a positive even if you're not a district.

Firecom is a free service to fire departments (meaning it doesnt cost anything out of an individual dept.s budget) ...99% of the time they do a more than decent job....yes at times they are overwhelmed with call volume..but they handle it. To hire dispatchers, buy equipment, pay for benefits and all the other hidden costs...its just not worth it..duplication of services when the money can be better spent....its almost as bad as having close to 100 rescue trucks for one county!

Who's going to dispatch for Roslyn 560 or 590?

Post by LT32 on Nov 2, 2005 19:37:56 GMT -5
You are right there are some positives with self dispatch but you guys are on the wrong page now. Tiger states: well look @ how 580, 930, 940 & 950.....all they do is their district....they have a layout of only their district...preplans the whole nine yards...it also makes it easier on firecom not 2 deal w/ numerous FD's @ the same time....the list goes on...i think there are more (+)'s than (-)'s...thats just my opinion Ok now dispatchers are not IC's preplans belong in the units and chiefs cars so they can be looked at. Roslyn Highlands have preplan books of all commercial buildings in the entire district in every unit, The chiefs cars have lap tops with preplan capability. Firecom operators are trained to handle nultiple departments at one time and In my opinion it is easier if you dont have 3 or 4 dispatchers stepping on one another during a sig 10, Most of the time when a 10 is transmitted and mutual aid is called firecom is involved anyway, doing M/A depts and lipa and keyspan for that self dispatched department.
Big Red states: you're right. It makes it a whole lot easier, when you have a 10 going on and then you have to deal with other dept calls. Self-dispatching is a positive even if you're not a district.
As stated above Firecom is involved anyway and now you have all the self dispatched depts and firecom trying to send M/A at the same time it is a nightmare,
Now by no means is firecom flawless they do have thier share of problems but in a county where we can't even get a signal to mean the same thing in surrounding districts the radio would be a living nightmare if more and more depts go to self dispatch. On a side note more and more self dispatched depts are now having firecom dispatch the calls if recieved by firecom.

OK Tiger 2 questions.
1. Why would you go on the air with a reported house fire isnt that assumed since it is being toned out or would another one of your calls be on the air for a made up house fire.
2. Why brag that you dont get out for as you put it the b.s calls but you are first due to the big ones, which by the way more than hal fthe times you are not.
and why take up more air time with ur 21f to a reported house fire w/occupants trapped you already said house fire all you need to do is say occupants trapped and 594 is 2nd due out of headquarters not 1st due.

Oh yes, let's have another fire department in Nassau use the non existent signal 21 F. It's amazing how many departments survive without knowing they are the first ones out.
