I got this in an e-mail and I hadn't heard anything about it which is unusual... NY FF Struck/Run Over by Apparatus (The Secret List) September 11, 2007 Hey... A Firefighter with the Malverne (Nassau County, Long Island, NY) Fire Department was struck and his legs were run over by apparatus belonging to that same department last evening. Initial reports are that the apparatus was backing up, at the firehouse, following a run. The Firefighter was immediately treated by other members, and then treated and transported by Nassau County Police EMS ALS and admitted to the hospital with serious leg fractures and related injuries. This incident is another firm reminder for all of us to review and enforce departmental BACKING POLICIES. Don't have a BACKING POLICY? Here are some excellent examples: www.iafc.org/displaycommon.cfm?an=1&subarticlenbr=413 Take Care-BE CAREFUL. From FF Close Calls UPDATE: FIREFIGHTER INJURED ON LONG ISLAND:
That Malverne FD Lieutenant was exiting the apparatus and had his back to the vehicle. The front, passenger side wheel grazed his right foot as it backed up. His foot was not fully run over, but it did cause a lot of pain, causing the Lt. to fall to the ground. Members in the area did not witness the actual accident, but saw the Lt. fall in extreme pain. Members assumed the Lt. was run over (rightfully so) and immediately ordered ALS and a medivac helicopter. After the initial assessment, it was discovered his injuries were not as serious and the medivac was canceled. He was transported, is in good condition but may need surgery for a broken toe. The driver of the apparatus is also in good condition, although obviously very shaken up. The MFD advised that internal reviews will be done and necessary changes to SOGs will be recommended.

The first post more accurately describes the member's injuries.
Thank you for pointing out where the info. came from. I did not even see that. I'm not being sarcastic.
The entire department is very shaken about this incident for a few reasons: first, that truck was the unit involved in the LODD of one of their members last year and two, one of their Ex-Chiefs was the IC at the Deutsche Bank fire. The department is going through a rough patch. That's all I am saying.
Malverne is one of the classiest departments on the Island and I am sorry that they are having to endure such terrible incidents such as these.

What is the name of the Lt I used to work with an Lt from the LIRR?
