I was wondering if some of you can help me out, maybe even get some good info from members in the respective depts.
I currently live in NYC and am moving back to Nassau. I go to LI on the weekends making room to buff. I am either going to be moving with friends to a place in Hempstead or I have friends in Elmont. It might not even be my choice where I move but...
I love the fire service and was wondering what would be better. I know Hempstead gets a lot of jobs and so does Elmont. But I think (from listening to my scanner and reading the board) that Elmont gets a lot more variety in calls like extrication and other types of rescues that I am interested in...Also I'm 26, do those Dept.'s have a decent share of young guys? I know Elmont Ladder 2 does, and they get out pretty quick...
I don’t want to offend anyone either... I'm just a buff trying to get back into the action...
Any help that any of you can give me would be great. Thanks...

Well there is no big diffrence in calls with the exception that Hempstead gets more work. Elmont gets their share of work, but Elmont does probably run more fire calls...EX: Carb Auto Alarms, Car fires etc.....What you have to decide is if you want to live in Hempstead or Elmont, more commercial in Hempstead compared to Elmont. As far as a company to join in Elmont, that agin is your prefrence. Ladder 2 in Elmont goes to all phone alarms for house and building fires and the town is split at night for stills with Truck 1. Elmont's ladder 2 does not go on extrecation jobs, they do go to Heavy Rescue calls if needed. Ladder 2 in Hempstead is also very active. As far as young guys and getting the truck out 99% of the time-Ladder Two in Elmont is were its at.

If your into Apartment fires Hempstead is the way to go. But with Hempstead you going to be driving to the scene instead of the firehouse if your into that.
Hempstead is crosstrain so you may be doing engine work one day and truck work the next.

Great Place to join and if you get bored you can call in a fasle alarms just like one of the "young Guys" from ladder 2 did. Anybody who says he's a "buff" and will move into a area just to be a volly in a particular Dept .......is either ill in the head or dangerous.

yea well maybe i'm just ill in the head then....there are a lot of bad buffs out there (believe me i know) but i'm not one of them. I heard about a guy that did that from elmont it was at a franklin square stand by.
I buff and i want to join a busy department because i love the work. buffing is exiting to me and it is also a learning experience. There is no problem with buffing as long as you stay out of the way. i dont have to explain my self to you or anyone else
go choke on that!

no matter what company you join in hempstead you will see work. T1 in Hempstead does training and has good guys, So does Engine 4 and 2 and 1...if your able to hang with some big dogs other wise just do what ya like. personally 31 working fires is pretty good dept to go to and thats a slow year...

i'm moving to nassau soon from d.c. and would like to join a good department
i've got a friend who says hicksville is a good choice... anyone else?

Well as I told Volly FF, Elmont gets its share of work and gets plenty of M/A work. Elmont is a fast team for Bellerose Terr, Floral Park,Stewart Manor,Franklin Square, West Hempstead,Valley Stream. Elmonts Trucks see a lot of the M/A and sometimes they get to the scene and go straight to work. Elmont also trains a lot with their new training facilty that was built during the year, plus a lot of in house traing. As far as guys hanging out their is always someone at E-2,E-3,L-2. as far as getting a lot of work there is Hempstead,Roosevelt,Westbury,Long Beach,Syosset,Oceanside just to name a few. It all depends what town you want to live in and if you are coming with family. But as always Ladder 2 in Elmont I hear has a bunch of young guys, Engine 2 and Engine 3. All three get out pretty fast-Good Luck in your journey

So you are going to base your move to LI on what FD is the busiest. How about quality of life, schools, type of community, etc? Both Elmont and Hempstead are great Departments but the areas are going downhill and FAST! Hempstead is just a step away from 3rd world status with Elmont trailing close behind. Gangs, burglaries, robberies, s.r.o's all await you in these two areas. Do you really want to put your kids in an Elmont or Hempstead school just so you can wack off when the tones go out. These departments are good now but in a few short years when the buffyness wears out you will relizeyou are living in a getto

Where people live is there own business. Don't down someone because you may live in a better neighborhood. It's all about helping the people you serve.

Great to serve the people ...blah blah blah....You move to Fire Buff heaven, great for a few years. Now you get married, you have kids want to by a house.... good luck
Hempstead Schools are a den of corruption at the Board level and both Hempstead and Elmont Schools are like sending your kids to Bed Stuy High School...
BUT THATS OK YOU're IN A BUSY BUFFY FD.
Tell that to your kids who are getting their lunch money taken each day by their new friend Tyrone.
Lets be honest. you all know guys who are leaving because they can't afford the taxes and the area is going to crap. Senior guys are leaving left and right. When mom and dad sell you'll be next.

fire guy......are u an ex elmont guy pissed at elmont or something? Your making some racist statements, I guess Glencove, Freeport, Westbury, Baldwin, Long Beach, Roosevelt, Uniondale are also "going down the shitter"? You sound like the guy who lost 1 to many elections, and instead of maybe saying "is there something wrong with me"? is casting blame on everyone else including the department, members and the area....your comments make no sense with regard to the original thread posted here.

Hey Fireguy if everybody had your attitude there wouldn't be no member's in those Dept. Don't compare your Dept. with other's in Nassau County. That's what make Nassau County Volunteer fire service so unique and great is that each Dept. is different from the next. With all types of people from different background and race both men and women.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Elmont seems to get really bad pins. The Turnpike and the parkways keep them busy. Their Rescue has FDNY and City ESU cops as members. Good Dept to listen and Buff.
Well as you can see "Fireguy"loves and hates Elmont. A jelous ex member like ladder47 states is probably trur-Or he is someone that Elmont turned down because he was a problem. As far as his remarks on the schools and the community...what as set of Balls he has. Lets tell all the members in Elmont of the racial remarks being made on this board and see what they say. I think if you are a good parent and are on top of your kids you will not have problems. Its what you put into your children that make them who they become. I grew up in the "Mont" and all is fine by me and my friends. You make your life situation by doing what YOU think is best. If Mr. Fireguy feels that these places are the gettho. I hope all those on this board tell him about their getto. Until your next stupid remark mr fireguy

I think Hempstead and Elmont are great busy Departments and yes I did praise Elmont and they are interesting to listen to, but I think we are getting off track on how this whole discusion started.
You really have to think twice about the type of person who bases what nieghborhood they move to just based on the amount of calls the local Vol FD goes to.....THATS IT !!!!!
But truth be told , those two towns are not the best areas to live in !!!! FACT

i never wanted the conversation to go like this.. I know that they are not the best towns to live in. I have friends in both towns that have offered apartments to rent to me thats why i'm wondering. I'd like to get experience and become a long time member in a busy department thats all.

If you were moving ( for whatever reason ) and your only options were a choice between Elmont or Hempstead. You have kids and want to get involved in the VFD - sounds simple ! Don't base your decision on the VFD because they are both great departments, filled with years of history and pride. If your worried about your kids getting shaken down for there lunch money, well guess what that happens in all schools, ( yes even in those all white, high class schools if they exsist ) - If your kids are geeks, weak, slow, or just ripe for the taking, well guess what happens no matter what school they go to. If you want to make your move based on race then move to china ! - We don't want you ! - My choice would be Elmont !

If you are a young guy looking for some fun then move where ever you think there will be the most action. If you plan on having a family you better think twice. You family comes long before jumpin on a rig and having a good time. In my case I left my former dept when I got married which was in an affluent neighborhood simply because I couldnt afford the 1mil+ homes. I live in an areas now where we catch alot of work however the schools in word...suck. My decision had nothing to do with the amount of jobs the FD got but what I can afford. My neighborhood is fine but the school sucks! My kids will goto private school which I can barely afford as it is. In the end do what's best for your family before the FD.
