Oceanside carries one on our tower ladder 244. Runs on pure oxygen not oxy/acetylene combo, works pretty well but we don't use it that much.

Are you suggesting 333 that our members have trouble operating the arc-air?

We carry an arc-air torch. Works well once you get the hang on igniting it. (LB L-2)

I've had the pleasure to using a plasma cutting torch at Camp Smith. Really is superior to a oxy/acetylene.

Are Air-Arc, Caldo, Exothermic all the same torch?
I have used Oxy/Acetlene, Caldo, and Plasma with the BTRTF.
In my department we have a Caldo torch that is not on the truck at this time. We had battery charging problems with it. I know there are other ways to get it going, but we might start looking at Petrogen torches instead.
I found they all have there uses. Oxy/Acet is what I base the other torches performance off of. Caldo cuts great but throws a ton of sparks and the rods burn up fast. Plasma is great but it has a limit to the thickness it can cut.
I would like to try a Petrogen torch (Oxy/Gasoline). It is supposed to be better then MAP or Acet torches.
Stay Safe

I'm sure not very often, it's usally overlooked. But it's a good tool to have if you got a row of taxpayers going and there all locked up. The irons man just goes down the row just as fast or faster than the saw if you no what your doing.

And when was the last time ANYONE used a torch at a fire scene? if you're any good with the torch it's quicker to cut multiple roll-up gates with a torch. i've done it twice in the last 6 months. it's a one man job, you don't need someone there holding the lock in place. and like other people said, it's good for other rescue situations too.

If you can handle a Partner Saw it's quicker to make a curtain cut on a roll-down gate.

seems to me that most people here agree that although they have them they rarely use them...my company doesnt carry one although i have used them before...on one side i would say if you really dont use it then why have it...however that would be a dangerous statement since we could say that about alot of tools some depts carry...overall it cant hurt...the more tools in the tool box the more options you have...so more power to you if you have one
