I'm really close to just gettng my own harness and I have some questions before I purchase... I'm leaning toward The Gemtor Class II (thats what our truckies get) but does anyone like anything else out there? What exactly is the difference between left-side closing and right-side closing ones? Wheres a good place to order a rope from and whats the best set up to have as far as carabiners and other clips? Also, how many members of engine companies have their own harnasses out there? I think I'll be the first out of all our engines, just our truck company has them. We cover a lot of apartment buildings and schools and its not too rare to ride the truck to calls so I figured an extra sense of security couldnt hurt to have on me. Thanks in advance for the help everyone...

The left and right side closing has to do with which way the flap on the front of your pants closes. If you look down at your waist and the clip is on the right side, then get the right side closing harness. Vice versa for the left. That way you can close your pants and clip the harness at the same time. I went with a simple escape belt from CMC because it's alot lighter, alot lower profile, and I wear it around my waist over my jacket so I can slide an axe in there or something if need be. As far as carabiners go, the typical setup you'll usually find is 2 biners, an escape 8 (you don't really even need the 8, just give the biner on your waist three wraps and you're good to go) and somewhere between 35-50 feet of 8mm rope. People vary the different parts according to what they like. Some will caryy more rope, thicker or thinner, some will have preference on if they want oval or "D" carabiners, what kinds of locks are on the biner, it all depends, but what I've mentioned is your basic setup.

At work mine close to the left so I have a left harness; at home my pants close to the right, so I have a right harness.
