Announced today...there will be a 3 week extension (to November 3rd I think) for filing an application to take the next FDNY firefighter exam. The test will still be given on the previous date of January 20, 2007. The physical fitness test has also been changed. The test will now be the nationally recognized CPAT (candidate physical ability test). The original FDNY test had each individual event timed. For those who aren't familiar with the CPAT, you receive 10 mins 20 secs to complete 8 events which include the stairclimb, equipment carry, hose drag, ladder raise, search, rescue, forcible entry and the ceiling pull...this is very different from the original test format because you can make up time on events certain events to compensate for ones that you may not be as strong at. According to the FDNY website, they have accepted 12,000 applications for the test so far. Good luck, guys... nyc.gov/html/fdny/html/home2.shtml

The whole thing is so confusing to me because whether the city publicly acknowledges it or not, these changes are to bring more minorities to the job. If I were a minority, I'd be offended by this...the city's basically saying "well since the minorities couldn't handle the test the way it was originally, we'll make it easier for them." It seems like (I can't speak for them) minorities just don't want this job and thats why they aren't applying, not because they can't handle the tests. On another note, I think the city should consider that lowering the standards is going to bring in many less qualified people who wouldn't originally have been able to pass the test, and these unqualified people are going to be any and everyone, not just minorities.

It's a joke. No one is going to be happy than the President of the Vulcans, who AMAZINGLY passed not only the entrance exam, but 2 promotional exams as well.
Any black on the job now (and promoted) should smack this clown upside da' head. For his statements are insulting, demeaning, and at times outright racist.
He screams diversity, yet with all the Spanish guys coming on, now he cries it's not enough.
Let a white guy scream they are taking away jobs from white people, and that person would be deemed a racist.
The money spent on "recruitment and diversity" could have been used to keep open companies closed by A$$hole Bloomberg. Companies that were mostly in minority areas. Therefore, taking away protection from his own people. But I guess those people don't pay dues to his organization, so they don't count.
And most of that money went to do nothings on overtime. And many of them were Vulcans. And this clown was asked a few times to head R & D, but he turned it down. Better to blame someone else for not doing a job you can't do.
Now most decent people that want a low paying job working for a city that could care less about them have more time to apply. And keep the skells out. PD is getting loaded with them, and it is killing that job. Now its gonna be the FD's turn.
I don't care what color you are, as long as you pass the same test I do. Lower your standards, lower your quality of people.
WTG, City of New York. Good luck to all the test takers. Any decent applicant off this new test will have to work twice as hard to prove you aren't a skell.
Stay safe.
