Posts: 8 Re: Central Islip FD "Fleet" « Reply #2 on: Dec 9th, 2003, 5:54pm »
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2-5-6/7 came to be as a result of one members tireless effort to prove that South Huntington Water Dist. could supply these pumpers when they spool-up. Our dist is benifit of 12 in mains in all the commercial areas. Because SHWD has tanks on Jaynes Hill [400ft above sea level] we have 90 to 95 lbs static presure from every hydrant in Melville. The main on Park Dr. off Old Walt Whitman Rd can deliver 5800gpm. With the exposures we have on the 110 corridor, 3K gpm goes fast. When you feed a tower ladder, your own deck gun and 2 or 3 three inch lines, you get the flow meters up to 2700gpm. Its a sight to see. Nick

I like that idea especially in your district with both the LIE and the Northern State Pkwy, Great idea, so it's really a Rescue/pumper than when you think about it, Mike 24.190.124.88

Posts: 7 Re: Central Islip FD "Fleet" « Reply #2 on: Dec 11th, 2003, 09:07am »
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- At one time after the Suffolk State School at the conner of New York ave and Old Country rd, was decommissioned, we occupied their fire house with one Class A pumper. Now that the land from the site is being redeveloped as housing for over 55yr old residents, the district bought land at that conner and built a 7 seven bay house. Six back to back and one in the middle going out the side. We'll start off with one Class A, one ambulance and the Stump-Jumper. This should all work out man power wise. Unlike the last house we built in the early 70s on the so service road between 49 and 50 which never became an active house. When things get going, the dist has plans to rebuild the north house on 110 oppsite McDonalds. Nick 24.47.109.1

They do not have a separate rescue truck (the former 2-8-6) anymore. They got rid of it 4-5 years ago. 2-8-6 is now their re-furbished 1979 Mack CF-600 Aerialscope, which was formerly owned by North Massapequa.
Melville FD's station #2 on the South Service Road of the LIE west of exit 50 was never really used as a response station. I believe the builder of the housing development "Huntington Hills" donated the property to the fire district in the late '60's. It is mainly used to house their antique equipment and was extended to house their now defunct racing team trucks 12.75.166.119

The crew that did most of the racing, lost interest. For the time being, the truck is waiting for a new crew to develop from the younger members. As for the sub-station on the south service rd, it was hoped that if we built it they [residents from "Huntington Hills"] would come. For about a year [1977] I was assigned to that station, I don't think there was ever more than 5 members responding to that station at any one time. Well anyway, its kind of unique with its round meeting/storage room. Nick
