I'm in need of information and pictures of any of the 2 1/2 ton brush trucks that have served or are currently in service on LI, specifically those built by Shunk on the early- 50's GMC military chassis. I know that there were a number of them over the years, and I'm looking for what departments had them and which ones currently do (including unit numbers). Please send pictures if you have them or point me to where I can find them (I've already looked at a number of dept. websites).
Here's a partial list of what I can remember off the top of my head:
Holbrook Sayville Bayport Bohemia Holtsville North Patchogue Nesconset Setauket Yaphank Middle Island Westhampton Beach
I know there's more, please any info and definitely pics would be appreciated, you can also email: ritterpa@aol.com Thanks

A few years ago Cuthcogue(8-5-12) bought our old deuce & a half(6-2-12A) when ourChivvis 5 ton(the new 6-2-12A) arrived. Our "12B" is a Shunk 5 ton, and our 12 is a 73 "cornbinder" 4X4.

Medford presently has a Shunk built 5 ton 6x6GI, a 5 ton 6x6 "trail truck", and we used to have a 1954 2 1/2 ton which was sold to sayville, they used the chassis for parts and the tank and pump for their existing 2 1/2 ton GI.

ChiefJoe,
I thought 5-14-4 was a 71 deuce and a half built by Shunk? Someone told me it was the same chassis we had for our GI.
I think most of the main players out East had Shunk deuce and halfs years ago. Coram had two that may fit what your looking for. There was one sitting in the Brookhaven DPW yard on Old Town Rd in Coram a couple of years ago. Brookhaven had two of them. Great River has an old one also. I'm not sure if it fits what your looking for.

The Heights first GI was the back of Selden's original homemade GI and the chassis from someone else's.. I know the have another one now. Both of Selden's were homemade.

Thanks everyone for the leads, now if anyone has any pictures they can provide it would be really awesome. It would definitely save me the trouble of driving all over and hoping that there's someone around who can pull the trucks out to snap a couple of pics. I'll end up having to do that anyway, but especially if there are pictures of the ones that are no longer in service or were sold to another dept. it would be very helpful.
Quick question: which ones were damaged/ destroyed in the '95 wildfires? I can't remember for the life of me...
Thanks again!

Pete - I believe Montauk, Melville & the "Boro" lost G.I.'s at the fire in '95 - Might have been one more.

Pete Ridge lost theirs in the RCA Property in Rocky Point during the wildfires. I think they built that one themselves. For some reason Dix Hills comes to mind also. I remembered Holtsville had one. I don't know if it's still around. Also Wyandanch had one with a "W" in the front bars that went to CIFD for a short time. Didn't Kings Park have one? East Islip's 1952 GMC 6X6 GI: Stay Safe

Whose GI is next to one of the buildings facing RT 25 at Middle Island's HQ? Its been there for some time, I assume it is a parts truck?

That would be Selden's second homemade GI. I spent many brush seasons driving and yes sometimes unintentionally breaking that truck. Definitely miss it. I heard it was going to be a spare when they first got it, but now I don't know.

sorry if this is too late... Heres a photo of one of Rocky Point's newer 2-1/2 trucks; 5a-7-6 It was built by Chivvis. the photo is kinda large. shorehamcom3ny.com/P5050343.JPGI like how they did the "killer bee" painting. Also have a GI tanker truck (5a-7-20) with matching paint named the "Queen Bee" unsure of who built it though

Yeah Melville's burned during the wildfires. They have another one now though. A 5 ton. N. Babylon, Deer Park, Wyandanch and Dix Hills have them i think.

Just so you know we built both of ours at wyandanch using an old military truck frame and cab , striped everything else and did it from scratch . Alot of welding and work but all chiped in and they both still work great .
