I think you have it wrong.. Off the back step refers to a skid load . My dept has crosslays and skid loads...Skid load most often are for big hose.. ie 2&1/2 inch and 2&1/2 into 1&3/4 for long or set back dwellings. I think most engines are set up that way.

Only attack line off the back is the 2 1/2.
1 3/4 off the bumpers, (2) 1 3/4 cross lays and boosters on each side.

None of our engines have crosslays yet. All lines (except for the 1 3/4" trash line) come off the back step: 5", 3", 2 1/2", 1 3/4" preconnect, 1 3/4" stretch. We've looked into them for new engines, but nothing yet...

Deer Park stretches off the back...I believe they have a 2.5 line, and 2 that are 2.5 reduced to 1.75

We have (4) attack lines off the rear (two are 1 3/4" pre-con., one "dead load" of 1 3/4" filled out with 2 1/2" , one "dead load" of 2" filled out with 2 1/2" - all S.B. nozzles). 5" & 3" supply as well with the 3" having a "wye". We have two 1 3/4" crosslays w/fog nozzles, but they rarely get used except for misc. fires.
Hey Garg. - Don't you guys have the "attack pack" (1 3/4" filled out with 2 1/2") on the 1st due engine?

Not to show my age from local county training in years past, which seems to be lost nowadays. But.. What's another name for a "skid load" on the rear bed, not meant for a hydrant hookup and reducing large diameter lines to attack lines? (hint, think West) What Fire Department in New York was the original crosslay arrangement named after, when they came up with it out of need? (hint, think cows) Have a happy Thanksgiving and enjoy the easy brain tease!

Extra points, what was the then Chief's name that came up with that crosslay arrangement?

My departments has a mix. The 1 3/4's on the two older engines are in Mattydales over the pump, with big lines off the rear. The two newer engines have the 1 3/4's and 2 inch in cross-lays under the pump panel, with the big lines off the rear. Some of the big lines are dead lays and other are pre-connected.
