lad9205 - We basically decided to go with Ferrara because they had designed alot of things we wanted already. With some of the other vendors, they offered us limited options compared to Ferrara in the areas we felt were important (Ex: Low Hosebed/Rig Length). What it boiled down to was that Ferrara won the bid and could build us the most operational rig in our opinion.

I believe Lad9205 was looking for detailed reasons for why we choose Ferrara not wise remarks.

it all boils down to the fact that you are getting an engine that you want and that will work for your company/department and the others could not build. a better question may have been 'what type of features are you getting on this engine that made it an attractive option for you?'

I was just curious because you just got the alf and the new pierce. I know that the cab of engine 1 is very tight . Are you replacing engine 8?

Yes we will be replacing Engine 8 - We will all be sad to see it go. Engine 8's replacement will have more room in the cab than the current Engine 1 (the new pierce out of HQ).

right, cause thats what you wanted, not ALF or pierce... Although still new, and we put Ferrara through two rounds of bids. They never said no, or changed the spec., worked at the factory with the committee and designed it again in front of them, delivered when promised. A few hiccups for a startup up here, nothing serious. I was impressed, if it's as tough as advertised and lasts, just may be the next Mack for the fireservice. And I wasn't totally on board with them in the beginning, just suggested they look at it. They lowered the hosebed with a custom tank and got it as short as they could after the committee and the Board went back and forth. I think you will be happy with it.

I still think that Pierce is the way to go, the unfortunate part is the service on the island sucks. Our department is in the process of spec-ing out 4 new engines to promote standardization. For once, they are seriously considering other manufacturers. My only wish is that they make the right decision based on performance, accomodation of tools and accomodation of members. I like the low hose bed idea, engine2. Let me know how that works out.

very nice engine. A bit too long for my taste but I love the low hose bed. Was alot of compartment space compromised for the 750 tank?

No actually we have an abundance of compartment space. Also with the new tool boards on the market, its amazing how many tools you can setup in one compartment and not have any clutter. The low hose bed is definitely one of the best features on the rig and was a primary focus of the committee.

the one compartment on the drivers side has like 3 tool boards that fold on each other, nice feature.

The big windows make it look like a tourist bus in the city. But all in all, looks dont matter to me. How does it operate? Drive?
