Just wondering, anyone who has experienced both systems, do you prefer Firecom dispatchers or your own dispatchers?

own dispatcher... can be focused on only one department, not 25+ departments at the same time
can get custom systems installed easier, like printers for run sheets or CADS in the trucks
easier to get dispatch/operational policies implemented and enforced
i think town dispatches (4-2-0 and 1-0-0) are the way to go. small enough to be kind of personalized while still being able to coordinate large incidents very easily.

Unfortunatly small towns don't coordinate large incidents they rely on Firecom for most of the additional resources.

I think each township should have their own Fire/Rescue communications, like Babylon Central. Islip Fire Communications, Brookhaven Communications etc...

Gargamel, are you suggesting perhaps Battalion-wide dispatch? Seems like a nice middle ground. Easier to monitor and control 6 departments than 25.

plus a common dispatch can reduce the number of different frequencies used
theres someplaces you go and every dept uses a different frequency with a different dispatcher...
like lets take a fire at the smithaven mall area
centereach has their own dispatcher on high band setauket has their own dispatcher on high band st james uses 4-2-0 on 4th div low band stony brook fd uses firecom on 5th div low band for dispatch, high band for fireground ops

It be nice to see a consolidated pd/fire/ems dispatch center for each county, but lets face it, we don't have enough dispatchers to handle that. As we stand right now, Suffolk & Nassau Firecom's are stretched to begin with. Could you imagine all depts going to Firecom right now, they'd never be able to handle it.
Besides some Amb Co's and a few 5th Div and east end depts, how many dept does Suffolk FRES really dispatch from start to finish?? Not many, 1st-4th Div's pretty much have their own dispatchers, so does a majority of the 5th. And the north & south forks have their own dispatchers.
I believe the biggest problem is that each dept is their own "kingdom" with their own sop's, freqs etc. Some depts have their own disp, some use firecom, some have firecom initally activate them...its crazy! No ones on the same frequency, let alone the same page!
It be nice to see each township in both counties have their own fire/rescue communications center. Everyone should try to get some basic sop's standardized (there's a word that got lost a long time ago!) so depts could operate better on mutual aid. Dare I say, each township has a UHF paging repeated freq, and a few more repeated freqs for truck response. Then a bunch of tac fireground channels assigned by dispatch to use on scene. And we could have inter-township repeated and tac channels for mutual aid.
Will it happen, prob not. This is not the perfect solution by no means, just food for thought. Everyday, depts grow further and further away from each other. Some depts are in their "own world" and I dont know how thing get done half the time.
In Suffolk we have a countywide m/aid channel of 46.38, does it get used...most of the time no. I know 46.38 does have it's problems, being the Putnam County tone out freq. We also have a fireground freq of 46.30. Most forget about these freqs when the "big one" hits. Other depts stay on their F-1 which they shouldnt, or are on their high band where everyone else is in the dark. Look at the fire in Bohemia the other day (Triangle Inn). That fire clogged up 46.44 for hours, when it should have been taken to 46.38 (the mutual aid freq, hello?) Other depts we operating in the fire bldg on their own UHF, low band etc. Now theres a mayday, or an evac order. What happens now, and who hears it and who doesnt?
Anyone have any other ideas?? because both counties are out of control..

Too many dispatchers stepping on each other - can't be good. Too many different frequencies also a big problem. House fire in GC a few years back had 7 different frequencies under 1 roof. How do you hear something like "get out!!"?

Making everything in to town dispatches can also simplify things like CADS systems. Instead of having 98 different dispatchers and dispatching software, you could standardize everything to one program.
to call another dispatcher on the phone for a mutual aid perhaps all the originating dispatcher would have to do is 'send' the call to another dispatch center, perhaps similar to an email or something and have all the information to tone it out right there.
If every one was on the same dispatching software, perhaps it'd be easier to implement in-vehicle CADS which could show all the information about the call, such as address/cross streets/caller information. A GPS map would prevent people from pouring over a map trying to find the location, especially on mutual aids. Dispatcher perhaps could even mark staging areas or streets that were shutdown (For something big that blocks up traffic you could easily see the best route to the scene). Chiefs could see a list of responding units.

What are we talking about here ? Firecom? Nassau? Suffolk?? Well if you're talking about FRES/KEG977 they are pretty much for the town of Brookhaven. They don't really dispatch for anyone outside that on a regular basis.

First it would be a toss up on which dispatcher would be running the "Fire" Mall is divided down the middle Half to Centereach and half to Nesconset. So it could be either 5-5-0 or 4-2-0 Both Use High band but both can talk on each others chan. plus a common dispatch can reduce the number of different frequencies used theres someplaces you go and every dept uses a different frequency with a different dispatcher... like lets take a fire at the smithaven mall area centereach has their own dispatcher on high band setauket has their own dispatcher on high band st james uses 4-2-0 on 4th div low band stony brook fd uses firecom on 5th div low band for dispatch, high band for fireground ops

The only draw back with firecom is that you have to use one of the county low-band frequencies, with a self-dispatcher you can (eventually) get your own freq (yeah right) and have a more personalized dispatch.

Many departments that are dispatched by Firecom are on their own frequency.

Yeah, but how long have they been doing it? Were they recently on low-band and made the switch to uhf?

Freeport and Rockville Centre have been on their own frequencies for as long as I can remember. Inwood has been for a few years, along with a handful of other departments.

Many departments that are dispatched by Firecom are on their own frequency. something else that nassau firecom can do, that FRES cant! FRES is antiquated! Theyre limited to the county freqs, and have no capibility to transmit or receive any depts own freqs, other than maybe a scanner.

But I think they can trip their high band pagers through 4-2-0's system, their tones get repeated on UHF. CI is going UHF Paging soon as well. Minitor V's are pretty neat.

Not complete true... I hear SC-FRES dispatching Hauppauge FD on their UHF channel FRES cant transmit or receive on any depts own freqs. How they do it w/Port Jeff, Nesconset for 19's and used to do w/Hauppauge was send out a DTMF tone on 46.46, which in turn patched 46.46 w/the respective high band to trip the pagers. It might seem like they were transmitting, but in essense they're not. They were just using 46.46. These setups located at these depts HQ made it possible. Other than that, FRES cant do jack!

With today's technology and how departments want things done, they should update or they'll get phased out because they're obsolete.
