With all the tech... in this time, are Audibles in our neighborhoods needed ? Are we holding on to history or are we really using it ? Most members of the younger generation feel that the older members use it to turn on there high tech pagers ? - Maybe it's time to do away with them, like the old pull boxes.

IF IT ALERTS ONE FIRE FIGHTER WHO OTHERWISE WOULD HAVE MISSED A CALL FOR HELP I SAY YES.

This conversation always gets ugly, but here'e my 2 cents anyway.
Get rid of them.
That is all.

get rid of them all !! The days of the audible alert is over let it go move on. And that one firefighter gets alerted by them should have his/her pager.

Although every member should be carrying their pager with them, the audible alarms still supplement the response system and I feel that they still serve a purpose. And if anyone complains about them (residents)...then I tell them that unless they are willing to get up at 3 am to go to the same automatic alarm every other night...then they should stop complaining.....We have bigger issues in the fire service to worry about.....

No we have people in our town who say that the alarms wake them up at night are too annoying..... Listen..thats the way it is in our town...do whatever you want in your own town.

Right... we have bigger issues to worry about in the fire service. And doing what our residents want is part of that. I'm sure that the residents would want piece and quiet in the middle of the night, not the blaring of fire horns.

all the money fire departments get for grants for radio upgrades IE pagers, why do we need the audibles. Guess what the general public doesn't like them why not try not to piss off the people who pay taxes that give you all the necessary stuff we really need.

Well tough luck for the people in our town who complain at night about the horns going off for calls... if they shut the sirens off, next thing you'll know is that the town will start complaining that we are taking too long to respond to calls because no one hears the horns going off in order to respond to the call... wait they do that anyways... haha

No one seems to complain about them around here... I remember last summer there was a few days that 46.10 was all staticy and a good handful of guys(myself included) were alerted of a few runs by the audibles. From 7pm to probably 7-8am the audibles for 9's shut down and only go off for generals which helps keep the town nice and quiet at night. Plus, its always said that everyone outside is a little more alert when the horns go off becuase they know fire trucks might be whipping down the streets real soon. Also another little tid-bit, the first thing my family learned about the fire service was that if they ever heard those horns go off again within a few minutes of a call they knew i was going to a worker. I guess it helps a lot more than just us in knowing what the situation is like. They still do more good than bad so far over here.

Should I even bother to comment here? lol Maybe you guys should read this page www.longislandfirealarm.com/knowledge.htmBut remember... If you think shutting off a siren or a horn will make relations any better with you and your neighbors..forget it.. They don't want to know ya anyway nor will they donate during fund drives.. If they really cared they wouldn't complain in the first place... So remember, feel cool with that blue light on your dash, your minitor 16 on your belt, that fancy fire maltese cross sticker on your back window of that buff mobile... The truth is, the people who complain don't wanna know ya from a bag off A-holes anyway! So Think about it!

Firebird, lets get one thing straight. People in your town do complain about the sirens. I know because I grew up there. You weren't even in the department when the new system was put in place and the residens of the bay park area bitched until it was shut down. On the other side of town, by the marion street school with the old siren on top of the pole on the corner, our parents used to bribe us as kids to try to find a way destroy it (unfortunately, they stopped us when we tried)

Use them as backups. Don't take them down completely because they might be needed at some point in the future, like when the dispatch console craps out or the problems with 46.10 last year. We only use the alarm during funeral processions, not for alarms, but I like the idea of having it if we absolutely need it.

Even as "backups" is a cool thing... as long as they are up and there to see who can argue completely... but just remember they have to be tested once a week at least.... Otherwise they won't work when ya really need them if they sit dormant for too long...

Oh, you get paid to fix sirens. Now I understand why you feel the need to preach to us every chance you get. It's called job security.

Yes, that's right. I get paid not to use them. I am not trying to convince people to use sirens for job security reasons.

Not for nothing but I think those of us that know where Grumpy works would agree that having audibles in his neck of the woods would be crazy noise that is definetly not needed. And second of all for all the call volume that is produced there, they would never stop cycling.
Maybe the audibles are fine for slow departments, but when you get into busy departments the last thing I want to do is hear it blowing 7,8,9 or 10 times a day. Even if it is between certain hours......

Yes, where I work, they were shut down a long time ago. But where I live, they are still active and they are incredibly annoying. I think so and so does everyone on my block (becase they all complain to me about it).
In addition to that, where my house is, you can clearly hear audibles for 5 other departments as if they were only a couple of blocks away. Sorry, but that disturbs my peace.

Most departments have such a distinct medley or melody of sirens/horns you know who has a call just by hearing the sounds.. it's like the different tones for each department. Anyway, yes I do side jobs on referbishing the big sirens and most importantly the Diaphone horns... I am the only person left on Long Island who knows how to referbish/fix/maintain the horns properly and I'm also able to get new cast pistons for the horns..... I'll leave you with this grumpy and LT... Without those audibles that you find so annoying, this tribute to a (LODD) fallen member wouldn't be the same... www.longislandfirealarm.com/Box2-2.wma

First of all Rob I have NEVER said I am against Audibles. I do think they have their place BUT in the ever changing world there is not as much need for them as there used to be. I grew up listening to them and lived and also moved to an area only a 1oo yards from the sirens. The point being is that the fire service must change. And the towns that shut the sirens down at night have seen this and acted. The town I grew up in shut the audibles down for a period of time and if I remember correctly there was NO CHANGE in response. Eventually they were turned back on because thats the way the department voted. There is no reason for towns to sound audibles for a BS alarm at night or better yet a sig 9 at 2am. Sound them for that house fire or sig 10 when you need that member or two who slept throught the pager, plectron, buff beeper, text message on cell phone and alpha beeper next to his/her head.
So far your only argument has been that you like the sounds and looks of these audible systems and dont care about the rest of the public (who actually pay for these systems) just your own personal pleasure.
ROB if you think the best part of a tribute is the audibles then you have more problems than you know.
The price of Real estate goes down when the neighborhood is in the vicinity of audibles and as far as the school closing audibles ask anyone who is not a fireman or firemans family what it means when the sirens go off at 7am with the differant sound and you will get blank stares.
Ill leave you with this You said "I am the only person left on long island who knows how to referbish/fix/maintain the horns properly" talk about tooting your own horn.

What is this Bash on Rob day? ya know the funny thing is I see some of you from time to time and we get along just fine..
Anyway ... Put a siren up on every street corner I say if it will lower real-estate value.. You gotta be shitting me! 700,000 Dollars and up for a cape cod in Mineola!?!??!!? F that! I'd like to see just how many volunteer fireman are buying houses these days! I don't want to hear anything about real-estate here... Its 3 times over priced and you all know it! The only ones cheered about are people that own a home but i'll tell ya something..doeant matter what you rhome is worth because where ya gonna go from here?? Iowa? Have fun!

OK, you want to play that card? How many sirens are placed near apartment buildings, garden apartments, etc?? Those people are more than entitled to their peace and quiet too.
If you're going to argue with someone, at least try to bring something to the table.
