Does anyone know of any hints some dispatchers give during the initial dispatch regarding if the call may turn out to be a working fire or not?.......If soo....give the dept name that he/she dispatches & what the hint is when dispatched...........Ex. "KED 283 Glen Cove Fire Dept signing on the air, 'at 11:30' (<--- the hint, time of alarm given in the dispatch), with a General Alarm, report of a house fire........ Heard some dispatchers in East Meadow say "618 is Out of Service" (618 is a maintenace truck) at the end of their transmission and sometimes they will sign on the air with the address only and say "stand by for cross streets (and map location)". They haven't done that in a while. No fires!

in east meadow, 618 used to be the hazmat squad many years ago. after they disbanded it, dispatchers started saying "be advised, 618 is out of service" at the end of the transmission when it was gonna be a job to give a heads up to one of the chiefs who was babysitting his kid during the day. it didn't take long before the heads-up caught on. i use "stand-by for cross streets" more for aided cases that sound like they're gonna be code reds.
last year, we changed our structure fire response to 2 engines and 2 trucks. you only get the bus here on a signal 10 or 98 or dispatchers discretion. so if when hear me say, "KEC697 EAST MEADOW FIRE DEPARTMENT ON THE AIR WITH A HOUSE FIRE - RESCUE COMPANY TO RESPOND," then you know they're probably going to work.

my favorite on air moments were:
a former east meadow dispatcher called a chief on another call saying, "chief, be advised you have a report of a house fire across from firefighter (so and so's) house" and the chief responding "23-610, and where might firefighter (so and so) live?"
i heard a roosevelt unit actually say "fo shizzle" over 46.32 one day. i don't know why but it probably needed to be said.
as much as i hate to say it though, the all-time best was in the city. the FDNY responded to an elevator emergency in which a guy was beheaded and the boss actually asked over the radio for a "body bag and a bowling bag."

Four pages and counting and no one has mentioned the female dispatcher from Hempstead Fire Department! Everything she says sounds like the "big one", even a radio check. Must get annoying in the middle of the night!

GC 520 Rodni is great on the air! I have an audio clip of a job SCFD had a few years back, just the re-tone of Signal-10, think it was Citko dispatching. If anyone wants to host it, PM me and I'll email it to you.

Ok, I have a question why does a dispatcher have to hint the companys might be going to work. Why can't they just say multiple calls or you are going to work.
