I am bringing this topic to the Nassau Side. On the suffolk section they were discussing who their favorite dispatchers are. So, lets try it here....
Which dispatcher do you really like? Whose voice just irritates you? What have been some funny things you've heard dispatchers or chiefs say over the air?
These dont just have to be FireCom operators, Private Dispatchers like Great Neck, Jericho, Bethpage, etc... are allowed too...
Just remember, We may have some Dispatchers on this board reading this....Try not to bash anyone too badly.

Does anyone know of any hints some dispatchers give during the initial dispatch regarding if the call may turn out to be a working fire or not?.......If soo....give the dept name that he/she dispatches & what the hint is when dispatched...........Ex. "KED 283 Glen Cove Fire Dept signing on the air, 'at 11:30' (<--- the hint, time of alarm given in the dispatch), with a General Alarm, report of a house fire........

#12 from 650, they had a drill a few years and he wanted to make it sound intersting , When the chief went 21 he told him they had leapers and screamers,
Also Firecom gives you a tip, they add fire department to the name of the department if it sounds like work.
Then there is #16 from firecom , i think firecom could be on fire and the tone of his voice wouldn t change.

Then there is #16 from firecom , i think firecom could be on fire and the tone of his voice wouldn t change. Not all Firecom ops throw out the department tag if it sounds like work. Some of them say Department all the time no matter what the call is.

Well, I was about to fall asleep the other night and I hear Firecom go out with, "valley stream fire department" didn't sound normal to me, never heard them say that. And of course it ended up being a signal 10. I believe it was Operater 52... Thanx for sharing the heads up knowledge fella's.

Firecom 50 sounds like the love child of Bob Barker and Rod Roddy. This signal 10 can be yours - if the price is right.

650 #12 Mike Tomko..without an argument one of the legends of the fire radio as far as tipping off for a job he would sound the "no school sirens" prior to the tones in Merrick to alert the brothers they had something...I even got to steal one of his phrases one night when I sent the boys to a job at a Bicycle store when the first chief got on the road and I had taken numerous calls I told the chief " pull up your boots chief, you got work"

one more thing Mike Tomko never sounded the no school sirens. Mike would hit the general sirens before toning out Merrick if it sounded like a job.

I always thought FIVE ZERO was auditioning for a place in an opera. Ever heard him sign off and on at midnight, really sings then.

There are a couple of more real winners out there. Locust Valley #7, Long Beach #10, and Long Beach's ALL time WORST #27. Sounds like they came to Nassau from a dispacthers office in the FDNY and maybe they should have STAYED there. In NASSAU COUNTY we use "o" as in oh my god, "O" is a letter and ZERO is a number. "O" in the city is what it is, nothing I say will change that but if you can't seperate the city from the county, it's time to stop. And saying your dispatchers number after every transmission, caaaaa mon!! Give the rest of us out here a break and go west.

Got one for you older guys near the Nassua/Suffolk border, Farmingdale and East Farmingdale members definatley know him. He is long gone but a legend in his own time - Jimmy Shannon for Farmingdale FD
The rudest, crudest, funniest dispatcher I have heard stories of... Legit stories I have heard about this guy that will make anyone with a sense of humor chuckle... - The man recieved a call from a frantic woman saying there was smoke coming from the house accross the street. Jimmy replied, lady, this is the FIRE department, call us back when you see flames. - He recieved an alarm from someone he knew named "Laura" stating a bush in her front yard was on fire. He toned out the alarm instead of a general or signal 8 as "Lauras Bush is on fire, your location...." - While activating the roof sirens for an alarm during the day, he recieved a call from a woman irrate because her husband just got off of work and was trying to sleep. While on the phone with her (well after the sirens stoped) He simply said "Hunny this ones for you", and activated the siren for another general round.
Again, this guy was definatley a funny man, who you had to hear for yourself. Lots stories about him, too many to share.
Stay Safe
